When I was still a brand new mom to my first baby, an adorable boy, I heard a little nugget of wisdom which struck a chord: “Never stop hugging first.” Such simple words, and such an easy principle to incorporate into our lives.
As my chunky little guy grew, and we welcomed two more cherished kiddos into our family, this tidbit became a natural part of who I am as a mom. For 17 years and through three kids, I try to be deliberate about this, to never stop hugging first. (Don’t let my kids in on the secret, k?)
What a great little piece of wisdom to come my way at just the right time in life. And while, as a young woman fresh on the path of motherhood, I was opposed to the often unsolicited but well-meaning advice from others — which mostly involved correcting things I wasn’t doing exactly like said advice-giver — I really just wanted to figure things out on my own. If I made mistakes or did it wrong, at least I would be doing things on my terms.
However, the older I get, the more I become polished by time. While I still don’t like being told what to do, or the dreaded, “just wait…” or “you’ll see one day…” phrases which tend to come from others farther down the parenthood path, I can now recognize words to be treasured, and appreciate little nuggets of wisdom.
Which nuggets would you share with women at the very beginning of their motherhood journey? Here’s what some of the moms in my life said:
❤ A rocking chair and a candle for the midnight hours…Some of my sweetest memories!
❤ Savor the good and survive the bad. They both shall pass.
❤ Healthy mom = happy baby.
❤ Say no only when you mean it and hold firm.
❤ Survive the tantrums in public at two and you’ll have a teen who listens.
❤ Listen to your kids for as long as they will talk at night, it relieves their tension.
❤ Do what works for you.
❤ Don’t blink…it seems like one day they are babies and the next day they are moving out.
❤ Treat every moment with your child as a precious gift.
❤ Win or lose, always be their #1 fan!
Being a mom to my three kids is the most significant thing I have accomplished in life. Every day, I feel blessed and honored to be a part of their lives. This post is dedicated to the moms who this year are celebrating their very first Mother’s Day with their little one. Cherish the journey.
Special thanks to all my gals who shared their nuggets for this post! 🙂 Do you have another one to add to the list? Please share in the comment section below.
